Achievements

Celebrating Every Milestone

Every Child. Every Step. Every Success
At St. Joseph’s Special School, we believe that success cannot always be measured by medals, certificates, or academic scores. For our students, an achievement may be speaking a first word, taking an independent step, preparing a meal, securing a job, or simply believing in themselves.
For over five decades, St. Joseph’s Special School has been transforming lives by nurturing the unique abilities of children and young adults with intellectual disabilities. Every milestone—big or small — is celebrated because every achievement represents courage, perseverance, and hope.

Academic Achievement

Every child learns differently, and we celebrate progress at every stage of learning.

  • Our Individual Education Plans (IEPs) ensure that every student receives personalized instruction suited to their strengths and needs. Students are encouraged to develop literacy, numeracy, communication, and functional academic skills that prepare them for independent living.
  • Several students have successfully completed the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) examinations, while many others continue to make significant progress in reading, writing, communication, and daily functional academics.
  • For us, education is not merely about passing examinations—it is about equipping every child with the confidence to participate meaningfully in society.
Sports Excellence

Sports have become a powerful platform through which our students discover confidence, discipline, teamwork, and resilience.

  • Students regularly participate in district, state, and national-level sporting events, proudly representing the school in athletics, indoor games, and Special Olympics competitions.
  • Many have returned with medals, certificates, and recognition, proving that determination knows no disability.
  • Every race completed, every game played, and every medal earned reflects months of dedication and personal growth.
Arts & Cultural Excellence

Creativity allows our students to express themselves in ways words often cannot.

  • Our students actively participate in music, dance, painting, drawing, drama, craft making, and cultural festivals. Their artistic talents have been appreciated in numerous competitions and exhibitions.
  • More importantly, these creative experiences nurture confidence, communication, imagination, and emotional well-being
Every painting tells a story.
Every performance celebrates ability.
Every creation reflects the limitless potential within each child.
Vocational Excellence

At St. Joseph’s Special School, vocational education is more than learning a trade—it is about discovering purpose, building confidence, and creating opportunities for independent living. Every skill learned is a step towards dignity, self-reliance, and meaningful participation in society.

Over the years, we have witnessed remarkable journeys of transformation.

Eldhose's Journey to Meaningful Employment

One of our former students, Eldhose, who received vocational training at our school, is now a full-time salaried employee at a reputed supermarket chain in Thrissur. His journey from the classroom to stable employment stands as a testament to what consistent guidance, practical training, and determination can achieve.

Godson's Path of Purpose and Independence

For Godson, maintaining a conventional workplace routine has always been challenging. Recognizing his strengths, our vocational unit provided him with an opportunity to create handcrafted orchid plant baskets. Today, he earns an income through this work—enough to meet many of his personal needs. More importantly, he has found a sense of purpose, accomplishment, and independence.

Elijah's Passion, Her Livelihood

Elijah, an autistic young woman, has transformed her passion into a livelihood. Through the training and encouragement she received at the school, she now creates artisan soaps and bakes a variety of products that she proudly markets and sells. Her growing enterprise has made her increasingly self-reliant and serves as an inspiration to many other young adults with disabilities.

Building Independent Lives
Our goal is not simply education—it is independence

Some of our greatest achievements cannot be displayed on a trophy shelf. Students who once depended entirely on caregivers gradually learn to communicate their needs, care for themselves, prepare simple meals, travel with assistance, manage personal hygiene, handle money, participate in household chores, and interact confidently with their communities. These everyday victories may seem ordinary to others, but for our families they represent extraordinary moments of hope.

Empowering Families
When families grow stronger, children flourish

Every child's success begins with a family that is informed, encouraged, and supported. Through parent counselling, awareness programmes, workshops, home guidance, and continuous collaboration, we help families understand their child's unique abilities and become active partners in the journey of growth.

Every Achievement Begins With An Opportunity
Behind every success story is someone who believed

A teacher who patiently encouraged.
A therapist who never gave up.
A parent who hoped against hope.
A donor who chose to make a difference.

Together, they have helped transform lives. As we continue our mission of empowering children and young adults with intellectual disabilities, we invite you to become part of this journey. Because every child deserves the opportunity not just to learn—but to thrive, to belong, and to live with dignity.

01

OBE A-Level exams

Many of our students with learning disabilities have successfully written OBE A-Level exams conducted by NIOS, demonstrating their determination and independence by completing the exams without assistance.

02

Sports Competitions and Artistic talents

In addition to academic achievements, our students actively participate in sports competitions, winning prizes and making our school proud. Others showcase their artistic talents through drawing, painting, singing, dancing, and crafts, earning recognition and accolades.

PROGRAMMES

ACHIEVEMENTS

Our achievements extend beyond prizes and awards; they lie in the daily progress and growth of our students. We believe in empowering our students to become self-sufficient within the scope of their abilities, providing comprehensive training programs and supportive environments to foster their overall development. With enhanced boarding facilities now available for boys below the age of 12, we aim to provide a safe and nurturing environment that promotes academic excellence, skill-building, and emotional well-being. Our goal is to create an inclusive environment where every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to reach their full potential.

08

ADL SKILL TRAINING

At our school, we offer specialized training in Activities of Daily Living (ADL) that encompasses a wide range of essential skills necessary for independent living. Our comprehensive program covers ambulating, which involves the ability to move from one position to another and walk independently, empowering students to navigate their environments confidently. We also focus on feeding skills, ensuring that each student can independently manage mealtime tasks, from selecting appropriate foods to feeding themselves effectively. Our training extends to dressing, where students learn to select suitable clothing and master the process of putting it on independently. Additionally, we provide instruction in personal hygiene, emphasizing the importance of bathing, grooming, and maintaining dental, nail, and hair care routines for overall well-being. Continence training is also a key component, helping students develop the ability to control bladder and bowel function, promoting dignity and self-confidence. Furthermore, our program includes toileting skills, encompassing the ability to access and use toilet facilities appropriately, as well as maintain personal hygiene afterward. Through our tailored ADL training, we empower students to build essential life skills and achieve greater independence in their daily lives.

06

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

Physical education is an essential part of our school curriculum, focusing on the physical development of students' bodies. It plays a crucial role in fostering physical fitness, discipline, and confidence. However, students with disabilities may encounter challenges in participating in sports and games. Adapted physical education is tailored to meet the unique needs of individuals with disabilities, involving modifications in procedures, instructions, tasks, equipment, and environments for physical activities. This specialized approach aims to address barriers to participation and promote inclusivity. Additionally, physical activities not only enhance physical health but also contribute to social, emotional, and communication skills development in students with disabilities. Our physical education program is designed to support the holistic growth and well-being of all our students, including those with disabilities.

04

IEP (Individual Education Plan)

In our school, we recognize that specific and measurable Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals are the roadmap for a child's success in education. These goals are meticulously designed to address the unique needs and challenges of each student, ensuring they receive the necessary support and accommodations to excel academically and socially. We prioritize the creation of tailored IEP goals to support students capable of academic learning, providing them with the individualized attention and resources they need to thrive.

05

PHYSIO THERAPY

At our special school, we understand the unique needs of children with developmental, neuromuscular, skeletal, or congenital issues. Pediatric physiotherapy is a cornerstone of our approach, tailored to each child's requirements. Whether addressing developmental delays, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, orthopedic conditions, or respiratory issues, our physiotherapy interventions are aimed at enhancing mobility, strength, and independence. We emphasize early intervention to lay the foundation for long-term well- being, providing vital support and guidance to families. Our goal is to positively impact the lives of these children, empowering them to thrive and succeed.

03

Occupational Therapy

At our special school, we prioritize the holistic development of our students, recognizing the vital role that occupational therapy plays in their journey towards independence and a fulfilling adult life. Our dedicated occupational therapists work tirelessly to support children with disabilities, illnesses, injuries, or developmental delays by addressing limitations and enhancing crucial skills. Through focused interventions targeting fine motor skills, cognitive abilities, and the establishment of self-care routines, our therapists lay the foundation for lifelong independence and functionality. By nurturing physical, cognitive, and sensory skills, we empower our students to tackle daily tasks with increased confidence and autonomy. At our school, occupational therapy isn't just about improving skills; it's about empowering our students to lead enriched lives, both now and in the future.

01

Speech Therapy

The initial step in any therapy process begins with assessment. Assessment is crucial for differentially diagnosing a speech and language disorder, enabling families to understand whether there's a delay, disorder, or simply a language difference, if present. Through assessment, clinicians can determine the diagnosis, severity of the impairment, recommended frequency of therapy sessions per week, and set goals for therapy accordingly.
